Born in Paris in 1878 into a prosperous Sephardic Jewish family, Mirra Alfassa trained as an artist, moved through the cosmopolitan world of Third Republic France, and gradually developed a spiritual vocation that resisted categorization. Her encounter with esoteric thought, including the Cosmic Movement of Max Theon and Mary Ware, and her 1914 arrival in Pondicherry, brought her to Sri Aurobindo.
